THE BATTLE OF VERDUN

02.06.2014

The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle of the First World War. The high losses of the French army are regarded as one of the main reasons why the British High Command decided to intervene in the Battle of the Somme.

As a "business court" referred to by the German Ministry of War, the battle was the French battle cry "Do not over!" Shape and require more than a million dead and wounded. Under the command of Erich von Falkenhayn, the German army was planning a major attack on a narrow strip of land near the French town of Verdun. The area was secured by twenty major and a total of forty smaller fortifications and was symbolic of the eastern border of France. Due to the importance of these fortifications the German High Command was assumed that they would defend the French army to the last man and lose their morals in defeat. A total of 140,000 German soldiers were scheduled for the first attack; they were supported by 1,200 artillery pieces and 168 combat aircraft. More info -> click here.
